The 1st Upgrades.

1990.

Before the start of the World cup that year, I decided to buy a large screen TV to watch the tournament on. I had just been promoted at work, so funds now allowed an upgrade to the Grimleyplex. Nicam stereo TV's were beginning to become available at affordable prices.

After much umming & ahhing, I settled on a Phillips 29' Nicam stereo TV at £650-. After buying a Scart lead, I discovered I could record Nicam stereo (even though the video was not Nicam) broadcasts direct from the new TV in Hi-Fi stereo, & play them back in surround sound!! Some US TV programmes were also being broadcast in *Dolby* surround (Twin Peaks!?!?) so on came the Grimleyplex for programmes like Top of the Pops!!!

1991.

My video recorder had gone wrong!! Took it in for repair, parts were no longer available!! So I bought a Panasonic Nicam video recorder for £450-.

1993.

*Dolby* Laboratories had developed *Dolby* surround pro-logic which was more like Cinema surround sound than *Dolby* surround. After a bit of research & hunting in the January sales I bought a Pioneer *Dolby* pro-logic amplifier for £350-. Centre speakers were few & far between so I used the speakers on the TV instead. I bought a pair of small speakers (Wharfedale Diamond IV for £120-) to use one as a centre speaker, but that failed because it made the TV picture go funny colours! I found out soon afterwards the speakers weren't 'Magnetically Shielded'. What a waste of time & money. After reading an article that *Dolby* pro-logic sounded better with a subwoofer I bought the Yamaha YST-SW50 subwoofer £200-. Total cost £670-.

1994.

I got fed up with the lack of choice on normal TV broadcasts, so I bought a satellite receiver & subscribed to Sky TV. Cost £250-. I also bought my 1st PC.
